Collision at Upshur and 5th Street flips an SUV and leaves one injured, one drive fled (updated)

The sedan is totaled, while the SUV sits on its side on 5th Street, south of Grant Circle.

(Update at bottom)

Around 4:30pm on Tuesday afternoon, a dark sedan and a dark SUV crashed into each other at the intersection of 5th and Upshur Streets NW. The SUV flipped onto its side, slamming into a parked (and unoccupied) Subaru.

Witnesses report that the driver of the sedan jumped onto the roof of the car and ran away from the scene. Others witnesses ran over to the flipped SUV and pulled the driver out. They claimed the airbag was covering his face, making it difficult for him to breathe.

The SUV driver was well-enough to sit on the curb and speak to police officers, before EMTs took him to the hospital. The whereabouts or identity of the sedan driver isn’t known as of now.

Upshur was briefly closed until MPD reopened it at 5:15pm.

Update: The sedan was an older model Honda Accord. It was racing eastbound on Upshur and blew through the red light at 5th Street, slamming into the SUV and flipping it over. MPD located and questioned two teen girls who were in the back seat of the Honda and who also fled the scene after the accident. The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital after speaking to MPD, and did not reportedly have any serious injuries. When we last were updated, MPD was searching for the driver of the Honda. The car was not stolen — and in reference to to a tweet I saw, no brown bag full of cash was found in the Honda. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
